High Quality Microphones and Android Phones

Hey folks,

I went on a quite an adventure today. I visited nearly every mobile phone provider's store (T-Mobile, Verizon, AT&T) today, as well as 2 of the best electronics stores on the planet in NYC: B &H photo , and J & R Music world.

My mission was really simple: get a high quality microphone into my Nexus One so that I can record really good quality audio into HiFiCorder. I must have spoken to literally 20 people today. I bought and returned about 10 different items, but in the end of the day, nothing worked, nothing fit, and I was very disappointed, but....I have some good news...And its called "TRRS"

The Nexus One has a 3.5mm headphone jack, which should support TRRS aka 3 ring 3.5mm (aka 1/8 inch) adapter.

And I've found some really good products online that I can't wait to see:

And there is even a sexy TRRS to XLR adapter that I'm getting too:

There were some REALLY nice products at B & H photo including a TRS to USB mini pre-amp all on one unit, HOWEVER, this requires phantom USB power, IT WONT WORK!! As mobile phones do not generally supply power from their USB ports.

So folks, try HiFiCorder for free! And happy recording!!!

------ UPDATE! ---------

I received the connections. The iPhone TRRS connectors work for Nexus One. HAPPY HAPPY, JOY JOY!!!
FYI they are made in Liechtenstein.... who would have thought. I suspect, that as time goes on, Asia will start making these. But, for now, get em while they're hot peoples! Thank you, and have a nice day!!!

  1. I just got my TRSS jack. Found it at the link below. It works but I'm still playing with it and the low-end RadioShack mic I have plugged into it. So far the sound it much better than my Droid Incredible's built in mic!

  2. Hi,

I tried the TRSS jack with my Nexus S and HifiCorder but it did not work. Could you please post here if there are any additional setting, either in the phone or the app that I need to make to enable recording via external mic?

    Thanks,
    MA

  3. I found that it required sometimes plugging in the TRRS adapter first, then plugging in the mic into that. Try different combinations like: TRRS first, mic second. or Both at the same time before HiFiCorder is opened. OR, both at the same time after recording has started. There is an order usually.
